Rajib & Roma: A Strange Love Story : Chapter 2 – The First Knock

Chapter 2: The First Knock

Stories don’t always begin with big decisions…
Sometimes, they start with small glimpses,
Unfinished conversations,
And those silent words —
That were never spoken,
Yet quietly settled somewhere in the corners of our hearts.

Sometimes it’s a message,
Sometimes, just a name…
And sometimes, a stranger’s smile —
That walks in without permission,
Without sound,
And somehow… stays within.
From there,
a new story quietly begins to unfold.

Just like the story of Rajib and Roma.

Roma was a simple, quiet girl.
She didn’t talk too much,
She never showed off.
A little reserved, a little lost in her own world.
She didn’t expect much from life.
But the everyday responsibilities she carried
had made her wiser than her years.

She had an elder brother — Vishal.
Four years older than her,
Usually away from home because of studies and work.
Her younger sister was Radha
Three years younger than Roma.

It was the month of March.
The winter hadn’t completely left yet.
Their mother was often unwell,
So most of the household work
had naturally fallen on Roma’s shoulders.

She never complained —
Not about the burden,
Not about life’s exhaustion.
There was only one wish in her heart:

“I just want my mother to get better… I don’t need anything else.”

That was her prayer every night.
And her only hope every morning.

She had no dreams worth telling,
No complaints for herself.

At times, she’d sit with her diary to write her thoughts.
But before writing even a single word,
She’d put the cap back on the pen —
As if afraid someone might read it.

Talking to a stranger —
Wasn’t something Roma would do easily.
Nor would she reply to someone just like that.

It was as if her heart had an invisible lock…
And maybe,
She’d forgotten the password herself.

And then one day…

A simple “Hi” appeared.

Roma glanced at it once.
And without thinking much — ignored the message.
Like a passing thought that reached the door of the heart…
But never knocked.

Two days passed.

The same message, the same screen —
Staring at her like a page written long ago,
But never really read.

On the third day,
At exactly 7:14 PM,
That same unknown boy messaged again.
Roma casually swiped the screen
And deleted the message.

But a moment later, a thought crossed her mind —

“Who could be texting again and again?”
A strange curiosity stirred inside her.
“Might as well check… if he’s trying this often, maybe I do know him.”

She opened WhatsApp.
Tapped on the profile picture.

For a second… Roma froze.
As if it wasn’t a face on screen,
But a memory.

A face appeared —
Innocent, wide eyes,
A faint smile,
And a slightly awkward expression.

Roma kept looking at the picture for a while.
She didn’t know why —
But something about it felt…

Familiar, and yet unfamiliar.
Like an old memory —
That couldn’t be recalled,
But was somehow felt.

“Who is this young guy? Doesn’t look my age…
I don’t remember ever seeing him before…”

Then another thought popped up —

“Could Radha know him?”

Roma called out instantly,

Radhaaa… just come here for a second.

Radha — her younger sister — came over.

“Yeah sister, what is it?”

Roma showed her the phone.

“Seen this boy before?”

Radha zoomed into the photo, tilted the phone a little,
And replied casually,

“No sister, first time I’m seeing him.”

Roma nodded.

“Okay.”
Radha walked away.

Roma stayed silent for a while.
There was a flicker of confusion in her eyes…
But also, somewhere deep inside —
A feeling.
As if someone had gently knocked
on the stillness of her life.

“No idea who this is…
But if he’s texting again and again,
Maybe I should at least ask.”

Finally, Roma typed:

“Who?”

The message was delivered at 7:33 PM.

On the other side,
Rajib opened it.
And for some unknown reason —
His heartbeat quickened.

Have you ever felt your heart race —
At someone’s first message?
Their first call?
That very first conversation?

Share that memory —
If you’ve ever felt it.

End of Chapter 2
